First Communion

“The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit.”  (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1325)

First communion for children and youth (first grade to twelfth grade)

  • Normally, the second grade is considered the First Communion class and the preparation process begins at the beginning of the academic year in August/September. They attend classes weekly.  Students will receive their First Communion near the end of the second grade.
  • Any time after the second grade, the children or youth attend normal religious education classes or high school youth ministry sessions each week from the beginning of the academic year. If the child or the youth is beyond the second grade, he or she may receive first communion with the second grade class, or could receive it during the Easter Vigil Mass or another Mass deemed most appropriate by the pastor.

To register contact the Director of Religious Education for children up to eighth grade, and the youth minister for high school students.

First communion for adults

  • Adults who wish to receive the sacrament of the eucharist must attend the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) classes which begins in August and continues until about one month after Easter. Classes are held weekly.  Whether one has already been baptized in the Catholic Church, a protestant faith, or not been baptized at all, this RCIA class is the process to receive first holy communion.
  • Adult candidates will receive their first communion at the following Easter Vigil Mass.

To register please contact the RCIA coordinator.
