Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.

Ash Wednesday is a day of Feast and Abstinence from meat. On this day, Christians throughout the world pause to mark their foreheads with Ashes. It is an outward sign of their inner desire to reform their lives. The three hallmarks of Lent are Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
